The events described in the work were transferred from the Transcarpathian village of the 1870s to Kharkiv in 1937 - during the Soviet repressions and the height of the destruction of the Ukrainian intelligentsia, when neighbor denunciations and "black holes" in the middle of the night were an integral part of life.
